The swiss franc was introduced on May 7, 1850 to replace the separate currency units of the swiss cantons. Before the World War I Switzerland was a member of the Latin Monetary Union. 1 franc equals 100 santimes (or, rappen). Banknotes have inscriptions in 4 languages: German, Italian, French and Latin.
