The national currency of Yemen was introduced in 1963. Before that there were used the Maria Theresa talers, indian rupees, Saudi riyals, UK pounds and the US dollars. The first banknotes in Yemen rials were issued in 1964. 1 rial equals 40 buksha or 100 fils.
