The Republic of Suriname was formerly known as a Dutch Guiana. Surinam became an autonomous part od the Kingdom of Netherlands in 1954, and full independence was achieved in 1974. The currency unit is the gulden. In 2005 a monetary reform took place, when the new gulden was introduced at the rate of 1:1000 against the older one. 1 gulden equals 100 cents.
