The pound is used in Britain since the X century. It consisted of 240 sterling (silver pence), which gave the name to the currency.
The banknotes first appeared in 1694 when the Bank of England issued it's first notes. 1 pound equalled 20 schillings and 240
pence. Decimal system was introduced in 1971, and since then 1 pound equals 100 pence.
