Before 1960, when Cyprus gained it's independence, british sovereigns and turkish coins were the legal tender there, and local coins in Cyprus piastres were minted. Since 1963 there appeared Cyprus pound, and in 1983 it was transferred to the decimal system. 1 pound equals 100 cents.
