Before Vietnam was conquered by the French, copper and zink dong coins were in general circulation. Beginning with 1878 the
indochinese piastre bacame the legal tender in Indochina. In 1947 the new dong banknotes were issued, to replace the piastres.
In 1978 and 1985 monetary reforms took place. 1 dong equals 10 hao or 100 su.
