The word florin (other name of the guilder) comes from italian city of Florencia, where these gold and silver coins were first minted since the XII century. Until 1875 the florin was divided into 20 stuivers and 320 pennings. 1 guilder equals 100 cents. In 2002 The Netherlands joined the euro zone.
