The german mark for western territories, occupied by the USA, the UK and France was issued in 1948, to substitute the previously used throughout entire Germany reichsmarks. Since 1961 the german mark became freely convertible currency. In 1991, with the fall of the Berlin Wall, the mark of Federal Germany became the common currency for the unified Germany. In 2002 Germany introduced the euro.
