Until 1854 milreis was a legal tender in Portugal. After the dismission of the monarchy in 1911, escudo replaced the milreis. Escudo was a freely convertible currency till nowadays. 1 escudo equalled 100 centavos. In 2002 Portugal joined the euro zone.
